The Master Builder

ACT ONE

.......

SOLNESS:I must tell you--I have begun to be afraid of the younger generation
HILDA:Pooh--Is the younger generation something to be afraid of?

SOLNESS:It is indeed. And that is why I have locked and barred myself in.I tell you the younger generation will one day come and thunder at my door! They will break in upon me!

HILDA:Then I should say you ought to go out and open the door to the younger generation.

SOLNESS:Open the door?
HILDA:Yes.Let them come in to you on friendly terms,as it were.

SOLNESS:Open the door?

Harvard  Solness, the master builder, has become the most successful architect in his home town by a fortunate series of coincedences for him which were the chance misfortunes of his competitors. He powerfully wished for them to  come to pass, but never actually did anything about them.

''A frock-coated realism'' lies within the play.

The tragedy of an elderly architect who falls of his scaffold while trying to show off before a young lady.

Another aspect would be : that the play is lyrical/poetic at the same time:

-The master builder's belief in his powers at their face value - in the manner of ''Peer Gynt'' travelling the Earth in his magical adventures while the faithful Solveig waits for his return.

The Master Builder is a play by Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen and was first published in December 1892.

Starring Naomi Watts and Ben Stiller, ''While We Were Young'' , introduced me to Ibsen's one of the most significant and revealing works.

Remembering  Faust , it gave me an overview about how we reach to other people and how we connect to them ; and how important our values truly are?

Do we truly own and stand up for our personal values or do they float through our words in the air - as we seem to be too busy showing off ; highlighting our ''good deeds''?

Elderness used to mean ''being humble'' to me. That way I could tolerate the manners of the individuals of my social circle.I would always say: It will eventually get better. We - the ''younger'' generation- will eventually evolve in that matter too.Why not? Collecting memories won't come alone. But apparently I was mistaken. With  age comes wisdom. But with also that coming, comes a whole new package of ''EGO'',the greatest enemy of human nature.
